Finnair has finally reinstated staff and interline travel privileges, ending a nearly two-month suspension that disrupted travel for both its own employees and airline workers from other carriers.
The airline initially revoked these benefits in January as part of a labor dispute with the Finnish Air Line Pilots' Association (FAPA), cutting off discounted and standby tickets not only for Finnair staff but also for other airline employees who rely on ID90 and interline agreements for work and leisure travel.
A Major Setback for Commuters and Leisure Travelers
The suspension of travel benefits extended beyond Finnair employees, significantly impacting airline crew from other carriers who use ID travel to commute. Of course, many airline employees live far from their assigned base and depend on nonrev flights to get to work, making Finnair’s temporary ban a serious hurdle for those who relied on the carrier’s network.
Additionally, airline employees and their eligible passriders who use staff travel for leisure were also locked out of Finnair flights. With the carrier unavailable on interline travel platforms like myIDTravel, many were forced to find alternative options, often at a higher cost or with less flexibility.
Benefits Restored, But Future Uncertainty Remains
With Finnair reinstating nonrev privileges, employees of Finnair and other airlines can once again list for flights, whether for commuting or personal travel. The airline should now be fully active again in myIDTravel, making it accessible for those booking leisure tickets through interline agreements.
While this is good news for airline workers and passriders, it also serves as a reminder of how quickly staff travel can be revoked in labor disputes. The underlying tensions between Finnair and its pilots remain, and future negotiations could put nonrev perks at risk again.
What This Means for Airline Employees & Passriders
For Finnair employees, the return of staff travel restores a key perk of working in aviation. For airline workers who commute, it means Finnair flights are once again an option, easing their ability to get to and from work.
And for passriders looking to use their benefits for leisure travel, Finnair should now be bookable again on myIDTravel, providing more flexibility and options across its network.
